Internet Users Will Trade Privacy for Content
(The Hosting News) – A project, which brought together senior executives from the creative and technology industries, has identified that privacy could be traded in the future for content, to generate new revenue streams for creative industries.
Even when we access content for free, we leave a digital trail of metadata behind us. By aggregating this information, organizations can generate a picture of a person’s behaviors and deliver relevant content to them.
John Cass, Director of the Creative Industries Knowledge Transfer Network (CIKTN), the organization behind the project, said: “Even when we access content for free, we leave a digital trail of metadata behind us. By aggregating this information, organizations can generate a picture of a person’s behaviors and deliver relevant content to them.”
The biggest issue with using metadata more effectively in this way are public fears over privacy. However, Cass believes that, in the future, people will increasingly be prepared to trade privacy for content or even financial reward. At present some companies such as Google and Facebook collect this sort of data without the users fully understanding its value.
“The big challenge will be to make the whole process more transparent so people understand the value of the data they have, how it will be used and what they are getting in return for that data,” said Cass. “This model already exists with store loyalty cards where we share information about our shopping habits in return for personalized offers and benefits, or cash back. The same model could be developed in the online world with companies delivering highly personalized content or offers to people.
“The traditional view is that content is free or paid for. The recent introduction of the Times paywall shows how content creators are looking for ways to monetize what was a free commodity. The other option is supporting the generation of content by intelligently monetizing metadata to deliver relevant and personalized information to users. Effectively people choose to trade some of their privacy for either free content or financial reward. More than 40% of the creatives we surveyed felt this could have a groundbreaking effect in their business.
“Content companies that recognize the need to make this process transparent and give consumers the power to make meaningful choices are the ones that will be able to drive new revenue streams and delight customers,” added Cass.
Privacy as a tradable commodity was one of several key findings in the CIKTN Beacon report on The Future of Digital Content, part of a program of 14 projects being carried out by the CI KTN to tackle the big technology related challenges faced by the UK’s creative industries. Each Beacon Project identifies key innovation and business needs to enable organizations to turn creative ideas into business successes for the UK.
Within the UK, the Creative Industries sector contributes over 6.4% of UK Gross Value Added and is growing at a faster rate than the economy as a whole. In 2007, total Creative Industries revenues amounted to some £67.5bn. The Publishing sub-sector is the largest, with Radio & TV and Advertising among the top performers.

IBM Acquires Storwize for Data Compression Capabilities
(The Hosting News) – IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Storwize, a privately held company based in Marlborough, MA. Storwize provides real-time data compression technology to help clients reduce physical storage requirements by up to 80% (1), which improves efficiency and lowers the cost of making data available for analytics and other applications. The acquisition is anticipated to close in the third quarter of 2010, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Storwize has over one hundred customers such as Mobileye, Polycom Israel, Shopzilla, Inc. and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction across a wide range of industries including energy, manufacturing, finance, insurance, telecommunications and cloud services.
With Storwize, IBM is acquiring storage technology that is unique in the industry in that it can compress primary data, or data that clients are actively using, of multiple types — from files to virtualization images to databases — in real-time while maintaining performance. This is in contrast to other storage compression technologies that only compress secondary or backup data. By compressing primary data, Storwize users can store up to five times more data using the same amount of storage, preventing storage sprawl and lowering power and cooling costs.
This is important now more than ever as the world’s data already vastly exceeds available storage space and enterprise demand for storage capacity worldwide is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of over 43% from 2008 to 2013, according to IDC (2).
Compression shrinks data so files and databases take up less space. Storwize’s Random Access Compression Engine (RACE) is based on the industry-standard compression algorithm and uses Storwize’s patented technology for real-time data compression without any performance degradation.
With Storwize, analytics applications can improve decision making by scanning many more years of historical data from multiple sources without the need to add additional storage equipment. Compressing data in real-time can also help make data available up to four times faster for transaction workloads (3).
Running Storwize data compression does not affect business and IT processes or other applications and does not require special skills to maintain. Product installation can be completed in as little as four hours, with little or no downtime.
“Real-time data compression helps address a significant client need — making it affordable to analyze and make sense of massive amounts of data in order to provide new services,” said Brian Truskowski, general manager, IBM System Storage and Networking. “By adding Storwize to our innovative portfolio of storage solutions, IBM is better equipped than ever to help clients handle growing quantities of data and make more of it available for analytics.”
“IBM has the strongest vision for the future direction of storage and we are pleased to become a part of that vision,” said Ed Walsh, CEO, Storwize. “Our customers will benefit significantly as our talented employees and innovative storage solutions merge with IBM’s world-wide reach in sales, service and research and development.”
Storwize joins other key IBM storage acquisitions and innovations that improve storage efficiency and analytics, including:
ProtecTIER deduplication technology that can be used together with compression technology to significantly improve storage efficiency.
The XIV high-end disk storage architecture that provides the performance needed to make data quickly available for analysis.
IBM’s Scale-out Network Attached Storage (SONAS), invented by IBM Research to support multiple petabytes of storage in a single file system.
The IBM System Storage Easy Tier feature, which uses ongoing performance monitoring to move only the most active data to faster solid-state drives (SSDs) on IBM’s flagship DS8700 disk storage system.
The Storwize appliance will work with popular NAS systems, including IBM N series and SONAS, as well as non-IBM NAS systems from EMC, HP, NetApp and others. Storwize real-time compression can provide added value to clients already using data deduplication, thin provisioning and other storage efficiency technologies.
This acquisition continues IBM’s investment in real-time compression, which has been proven for DB2 and Informix to reduce the overall total cost of information ownership by up to 80%.
About Storwize
Storwize provides online storage optimization through real-time data compression, delivering dramatic cost reduction without performance degradation. Based on the Storwize’s Random Access Compression Engine™ (RACE), Storwize STN appliances transparently compress primary storage between 50 and 80 percent without changes in performance, storage, applications, networks, or processes. RACE ensures that Storwize appliances deliver real-time random access and deterministic, lossless data compression to maintain reliable and consistent performance and data integrity. Storwize helps slow the growth of storage acquisition and related storage life-cycle costs, including reducing the amount of storage to be managed, powered, and cooled. Storwize is headquartered in Marlborough, MA with offices worldwide. Storwize, optimize without compromise.

Microsoft, Adobe Collaborate Against Online Threats
(The Hosting News) – Today at the Black Hat USA 2010 conference, Microsoft Corp. announced that it will extend its Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP) to include vulnerability information sharing from Adobe Systems Inc. Microsoft also discussed the new policy of coordinated vulnerability disclosure — a reframing of responsible disclosure — and introduced new tools and guidance that will improve online security for customers.
Extending Microsoft Active Protections Program in Collaboration With Adobe Systems
Launched in October 2008 by the Microsoft Security Response Center, MAPP is a unique collaborative effort that facilitates advanced information sharing on Microsoft product vulnerabilities with security software providers. In fall 2010, Adobe will join Microsoft and share its vulnerability information with the 65 global MAPP members, offering advanced protections to hundreds of millions of people. Through programs like MAPP, Microsoft is helping protect customers from the threats of today and tomorrow.
“Adobe products are relied on by individuals and organizations worldwide. Given the relative ubiquity and cross-platform reach of many of our products, as well as the continued shifts in the threat landscape, Adobe has attracted increasing attention from attackers,” said Brad Arkin, senior director of product security and privacy at Adobe. “We are committed to our customers’ security at every level and are excited to leverage MAPP as an important part of our overall product security initiative. MAPP is a great example of a tried and proven model giving an upper hand to a network of global defenders who all rally behind a shared purpose — protecting our mutual customers.”
“Microsoft acknowledges that the constantly changing threat landscape requires a new approach to security — collaboration and shared responsibility are key as past individual efforts are no longer enough,” said Mike Reavey, director of the Microsoft Security Response Center at Microsoft. “We’re excited about extending the benefits of MAPP to Adobe users as we’ve seen clear evidence of its impact in advancing customer protections. We continue to encourage the collective industry — from security researchers and vendors to customers— to recognize the responsibility we all share in fortifying the broader computing ecosystem against online crime.”
Shift to Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure
In recognition of the endless debate between responsible disclosure and full disclosure proponents and the debate’s ability to detract from productive industry collaboration and customer defense, Microsoft announced it will move to a new practice and philosophy of coordinated vulnerability disclosure.
Definition of coordinated vulnerability disclosure. Microsoft believes coordinated vulnerability disclosure is when newly discovered vulnerabilities in hardware, software and services are disclosed directly to the vendors of the affected product, to a CERT-CC or other coordinator who will report to the vendor privately, or to a private service that will likewise report to the vendor privately. The finder allows the vendor an opportunity to diagnose and offer fully tested updates, workarounds or other corrective measures before detailed vulnerability or exploit information is shared publicly. If attacks are underway in the wild, earlier public vulnerability details disclosure can occur with both the finder and vendor working together as closely as possible to provide consistent messaging and guidance to customers to protect themselves.
Additional details on coordinated vulnerability disclosure can be found at http://blogs.technet.com/b/ecostrat/archive/2010/07/22/coordinated-vulnerability-disclosure-bringing-balance-to-the-force.aspx.
Microsoft calls on the broader community — from security researchers to vendors — to move to coordinated vulnerability disclosure. The need for coordination and shared responsibility has never been greater, as the computing ecosystem faces an unprecedented level of threat from the criminal element. To overcome that element, we must work together to improve the security of the entire ecosystem — and, as always, making customer protection our highest priority.
New Tools and Guidance
Microsoft also today released several resources that will help customers make informed decisions and manage risk. These releases demonstrate the company’s ongoing efforts to improve customer experience by developing and sharing guidance and solutions. Microsoft urges organizations to leverage this freely available guidance to protect against threats and improve their security processes.
Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET). EMET is a free tool that brings newer security mitigations to older Microsoft platforms and applications, both third-party and line of business applications. The tool specifically helps block targeted attacks against unfixed vulnerabilities. The tool will be available in August. Those interested can visit http://ecn.channel9.msdn.com/o9/edge/9900/29900/emetoverview72010_edge.wmv to watch an instructional video.
Microsoft vulnerability research (MSVR) paper. The MSVR was launched to share the lessons Microsoft has learned about building more secure software and responding to vulnerabilities in third-party products built on the company’s platform. Since its launch in 2008, the MSVR has worked with more than 30 vendors, helping improve both Microsoft’s software, as well as third-party products, ultimately keeping more people safe online. A more detailed account on how the MSVR has improved the overall security of Microsoft and third-party products can be downloaded at http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9738193.
A Report: Building a Safer, More Trusted Internet Through Information Sharing. In August 2008, Microsoft launched three security-related programs designed to collectively share more information with partners and customers. As outlined in this report, the three programs — MAPP, the Microsoft Exploitability Index and the MSVR — have evolved over the past two years, creating a safer online environment for people around the world. For example:
Sourcefire Inc. reported that in the race between exploit and protection, MAPP has helped to reduce the risk of attack in some cases by more than 75 percent.
According to iDefense Labs, the Microsoft Exploitability Index has helped reduce risk by providing system administrators with the information they need to prioritize security updates.
Since 2009, the MSVR program has identified 35 different software vulnerabilities affecting a total of 19 vendors. To date, 45 percent of those vulnerabilities have been resolved, helping better secure Microsoft’s platform and the larger computing environment.
The full report on the progress of these three programs can be viewed at http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9738546.
Given the increasing criminality of the threat landscape, it’s clear that a new approach to security is required. Microsoft encourages a shared sense of responsibility across the ecosystem as no one company, individual or technology can solve today’s complex security challenges. As such, Microsoft calls on the industry to continue to collaborate and coordinate to combat online threats and create a safer, more trusted Internet.

Google Crowned “King of Malware”
(The Hosting News) – Barracuda Networks Inc., a leading provider of content security, data protection and application delivery solutions, today released its Barracuda Labs 2010 Midyear Security Report, revealing data from two key areas: search engine malware and Twitter use and crime rate. The company is presenting this data at Security BSides Las Vegas and DefCON 18 this week in Las Vegas. The full report is available at the company’s security research portal at http://barracudalabs.com.
Searching for Malware
Barracuda Labs conducted a study across Bing, Google, Twitter and Yahoo!, over a roughly two-month period. The analysis reviews more than 25,000 trending topics and nearly 5.5 million search results. The purpose of the study was to analyse trending topics on popular search engines to understand the scope of the problem and to identify the types of topics used by malware distributors. The results will be presented at DefCON 18 on Saturday, July 31, at 11:00 a.m. PT, at the Riviera Hotel & Casino.
Key highlights from the search engine study include:
• Overall, Google takes the crown for malware distribution – turning up more than twice the amount of malware as Bing, Twitter and Yahoo! combined when searches on popular trending topics were performed. Google presents at 69 per cent; Yahoo! at 18 per cent; Bing at 12 per cent; and Twitter at one per cent.
• The average amount of time for a trending topic to appear on one of the major search engines after appearing on Twitter varies tremendously: 1.2 days for Google, 4.3 days for Bing, and 4.8 days for Yahoo!
• Over half of the malware found was between the hours of 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. GMT.
• The top 10 terms used by malware distributors include the name of a NFL player, three actresses, a Play*boy [sic] Playmate and a college student who faked his way into Harvard.
The Darkside of Twitter
Barracuda Labs analysed more than 25 million Twitter accounts, both legitimate and malicious. The purpose of this part of the study was to measure and analyse account behaviour on Twitter in order to model normal user behaviour and identify features that are strong indicators of illegitimate account use. The study reviews several key areas including True Twitter Users1, Twitter Crime Rate2, and Tweet Number3. The results will be presented at Security Bsides Las Vegas on Wednesday, July 28, at 3:00 p.m. PT, at the 2810 Resort.
Key highlights from the Twitter research include:
• In general, activity is increasing on Twitter: more users are coming online; True Twitter Users are tweeting more often, and even casual users are becoming more active. As users become more active, the malicious activity also increases
• Only 28.87 per cent of Twitter users are actual True Twitter Users
• Half of Twitter users tweet less than once a day, yet one in 10 users tweet five or more times a day and 30 per cent of Twitter accounts have never tweeted
• One in every eight Twitter users has at least 10 times more followers than they are following
• Only one in 10 users is following more than 100 users, and almost half are following less than five
• The Twitter Crime Rate for the first half of 2010 was 1.67 per cent

Enterprise-Grade Virtualization Management Now Available
(The Hosting News) – Managing open source hypervisors, including Xen and KVM, became a lot easier today with the release of ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise edition from Convirture Corp.
The open source version of ConVirt has been available for more than three years and is broadly deployed and well-tested in real-world data centers — having been downloaded more than 30,000 times. In fact, ConVirt1.x is included in most major Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, Open SUSE, Debian and others.
ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise extends ConVirt Open Source with the advanced automation and scalability features necessary for running large-scale or mission-critical virtualized environments. By delivering high availability, backup and recovery, storage and network automation, and enterprise-grade security, ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise enables IT managers to meet and exceed service levels while using infrastructure in the most efficient way.
ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise is also the go-to tool for enterprises ready to move beyond virtualized infrastructure management towards a hosted or private cloud model. With an extensive cloud management feature set, which includes multi-tenant security, delegated control, scheduled provisioning, resource limiting, and many more, ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise enables IT organizations to offer infrastructure-as-a-service, while ensuring full isolation and compliance with corporate policies.
“We’ve implemented a variety of virtualization platforms over the years and managing them all – especially the open source hypervisors – has always been the single biggest pain point,” said Steven Scoleri, Principal Architect at GSI Commerce, a leading provider of e-commerce and interactive marketing services. “Our beta test of ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise has gone very well and we think it just may be the game-changer we’ve been looking for. We no longer need experts on hand at all times to complete simple virtualization tasks. We look forward to further exploring ConVirt’s capabilities and using it to manage our entire open source-based virtual data center.”
“Until now, any organization that wanted a complete solution for managing and automating a virtual data center was locked into expensive and proprietary solutions like VMware vCenter,”,” said Arsalan Farooq, CEO of Convirture. “That changes today as ConVirt 2.0’s advanced automation, private cloud management, enterprise scalability and datacenter integration features now meet or exceed what’s available from proprietary platform vendors. With ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise, organizations considering Xen or KVM as open source alternatives to commercial virtualization platforms are no longer forced to compromise on manageability.”
About ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise
ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise supports all of the features available with the ConVirt 2.0 Open Source product including:
- Server pool-based management
- Templates-based provisioning
- Monitoring and configuration management

Today’s release, which has been in development for nearly a year, also offers improvements in security, platform support and ease of integration with IT applications, including control panels and Cloud orchestrators.
The new release offers several key new features. The optional Windows Provisioning Module enables the deployment of Microsoft® Windows Server 2008 and Windows® 7 systems using the same graphical or programmatic interfaces used to provision all current releases of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE and SLES as well as legacy Windows operating systems. The new online self-help and knowledge base provides customers with unprecedented self-support ability.
LinMin now also offers more streamlined application integration. Release 6.0 boasts an upgraded API, including a new disk imaging interface, enhanced provisioning support, and token and IP-based authentication. LinMin’s API enables Cloud, hosting and corporate data centers to seamlessly add provisioning and imaging support to their existing IT applications, enabling full server provisioning, recovery and cloning automation of the data center. The API also enables Independent Software Vendors and OEMs to augment their offerings with sophisticated provisioning and imaging capabilities.
“Large hosting companies need to implement server provisioning automation as much as possible in order to keep service levels high and costs low,” said David Elbaze, Managing Director, Elb Group Netissime, a leading French hosting company. “We standardized on LinMin Bare Metal Provisioning 6.0 because it takes less than one day to implement, is easy to use, reduces labor costs tremendously and offers very high scalability, resulting in very efficient data center operations.”
“LinMin Bare Metal Provisioning 6.0 incorporates everything we’ve learned from LinMin production deployments in numerous data centers and IT shops worldwide, including enhancements in performance, platform support, security over public networks, online self-help, rescue system deployment and the provisioning of Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7,” said Laurent Gharda, CEO of LinMin Corp. “Our new Application Programming Interface enables data centers and OEMs to easily add automated provisioning and imaging to any IT application.”
Ultimately, LinMin helps create flexibility within the data center. By enabling system administrators to automate server provisioning, scalability is enhanced without increasing cost. Disaster Recovery is also substantially streamlined with LinMin’s snapshot rollback capability. By offering both a browser-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) and an Application Programming Interface (API) so customers can integrate their control panels, cloud orchestrators and other automation tools, LinMin makes server provisioning, rollback and cloning easy.
LinMin is also used to automate PC deployments by remotely installing Windows 7, Windows XP and Linux. PCs can also be backed up and restored, avoiding lengthy OS and application installations should PCs get infected with malware.

ISPsystem Supports Cloud Linux’s SecureLVE
(The Hosting News) – Cloud Linux Inc., an innovative software company dedicated to serving the needs of hosting service providers, today announces that ISPsystem will support SecureLVE™ in their control panel, ISPmanager. As one of the leading web server control panels, ISPmanager allows hosting service providers to manage various aspects of a web server via a friendly and easy-to-use web interface. Integrating SecureLVE into the control panel gives hosting providers new security controls previously unavailable.
SecureLVE is based on CloudLinux’s Lightweight Virtual Environment™ technology and creates a new level of security for shared hosting servers. SecureLVE provides a virtualized file system, which separates each user on the server into its own environment, preventing one user from seeing any other users on the server. This new server security makes it difficult for hackers to attack, deface, or steal data from the shared web server.
“We are very pleased to have SecureLVE integrated into ISPmanager because it will give hosting providers not only the control promised by CloudLinux but also the most secure shared hosting environment available,” states Cloud Linux Inc. Founder and CEO Igor Seletskiy.
Since it is based on CloudLinux’s Lightweight Virtual Environment technology that allows the administrator to control usage of the resources on a server at the tenant or application level, SecureLVE virtualizes a filesystem to limit the available applications, devices, and what a user can see in the file system to make it harder for an attacker to penetrate the server. Unlike existing technologies limited only to shell access, SecureLVE works across shell, CGI & cronjobs.
“Supporting CloudLinux with ISPmanager is a big win for our customers,” states Igor Chekushkin, ISPsystem CEO. “SecureLVE will fill the critical gap in security for shared hosting setup. Combining the ability to manage resources on a per tenant basis with the ease of ISPmanager will create a top of the line solution and a excellent experience for the end customers.”
The integration of SecureLVE into ISPmanager is further demonstration of Cloud Linux’s promise to help service providers improve efficiency and security of multi- tenant setups. SecureLVE provides system administrations functionality similar to container based virtualization, but on application level instead of the OS level. It will fill the gap between shared hosting and virtual private servers (VPS), and will allow server administrators to increase server stability and density while greatly improving the security of shared hosting.

Ubersmith Adds Brand New Advanced Search Tools
(The Hosting News) – Ubersmith recently announced the release of the latest version of its flagship datacenter management software, Ubersmith DE Version 1.8, with Natural Language Search across all of its core modules. Now, data center managers can find and quickly correlate client account information, support issues, and device and usage data across the platform 85% faster. The new search tool returns more relevant and nearly instant results from very large data sets; and, as part of the leading automation software for the web hosting and data center market, it will save users thousands of hours per year, while improving reaction time to critical issues.
Complex searches that used to take 30-60 seconds now take less than five seconds thanks to the integration of powerful Apache SOLR and Zend Lucene search engines. The search tools also allow advanced screening capabilities in instances where either limited or obscure information is all that is available, such as support ticket information, one of the most important use cases, or IP addresses in use.
“The latest release of Ubersmith DE meets the service provider market’s needs for drastic improvements in speed when dealing with large data sets and user bases, which is typical for Ubersmith clients” said Dan Cech, chief technology officer. “As we make critical advancements in scalability and performance, we deliver on Ubersmith’s promise to bring continuous innovation, greater efficiency, cutting-edge features and time and cost savings to our customers.”
The new natural language search functionality is just one of hundreds of feature enhancements added in Ubersmith DE Version 1.8 in order to maintain the company’s position as the leader in streamlining data center operations and improving the efficiency and automation of service providers across the lifecycle of datacenter operations, assets, and customers.
Other Feature Enhancements in Ubersmith DE Version 1.8 include:
• New support feature for “Level 2″ credit card processing helps merchants save money on transaction fees: This new features sends tax details along with each transaction to help merchants accept more credit cards and qualify for the best rates. Merchants with large numbers of customers and high transaction volumes (such as government and large corporations) will benefit by getting higher approval percentages and more favorable rates.
• System-wide and Support Manager User Interface (UI) enhancements help better manage large numbers of data, especially support tickets, by adding usability improvements and time-saving data correlation on the support screens, as well as the screens to manage billing, client accounts, orders, permissions, and reports and monitoring.
• Integrated device support has been expanded to new switch and rebooter/PDU models, adding to the hundreds of specialty datacenter switches, servers and appliances that Ubersmith already supports.
• Expanded virtualization features to manage cloud and hybrid offerings via the Virtuozzo API.
• Several new API calls, including support for tags, enhancements to IP management handling and order queue interaction
• SSL certificate provisioning enhancements
• Plus, over 200 bug fixes, speed and usability improvements.
Hosting companies, managed services provider (MSPs), public cloud vendors, SAAS providers and enterprises can now manage multiple areas of the operations and business faster and more effectively, including: billing automation, management and provisioning of devices, support and trouble ticket resolution, customer relationship management (CRM), usage and alert monitoring and integrated financial and business reporting.
Ubersmith DE 1.8 is designed to fit the needs of all sizes of service providers, from startup cloud providers all the way to the largest ISPs and enterprises and is available starting from a low, monthly base rate. Each installation of Ubersmith comes with comprehensive migration assistance and full 24/7 support from Ubersmith’s team of expert engineers. Upgrades are performed by contacting customer support.
